What is Blocking You From Fulfilling Your Purpose

A 15-Minute-Exercise to find out right now.

The following exercise, meant to help you with fulfilling your purpose, is based on the principles of ‘Systemic Constellation’. Click here to read a short introduction to this powerful healing technique.

Introduction

However you define ‘purpose’ – we all have this urge to live a fulfilled life, doing what we love and what we are good at, at the benefit of both ourselves and others. Some of us know exactly what we are meant to do in this world but we simply don’t know how to realize it. Maybe we are already trying but do not seem to get to the desired results. Or we constantly postpone or find (usually very valid) excuses why the time is not right to go for it. Others keep on trying and searching or get stuck on a different path because when it comes down to it – we have no idea what would make us happy. Does such a thing as ‘purpose’ even exist? No matter if you know or don’t know what you are meant to do in this life – this exercise will help you get closer to understanding what is blocking you from getting closer to it.

Preparation

  • Prepare some space (10m2 will do, the more the better of course)  in which you can work quietly and move freely.
  • Pick three objects you can use as representations (this can be anything from your childhood teddy bear to a scarf, a candle, a piece of cloth, paper…. as long as you can either stand or place your hand on it – you’re good!). As you can see in the pictures, I personally use colored fleece tissues designed for this purpose by the Israeli School of Family Constellation.
  • Make sure you have at least 15 min of undisturbed time for yourself. If you are tight on time, you can leave out the writing part – although I strongly recommend you to include it because it has tremendous integration value. If you want to go a bit deeper – take half an hour or more. In this case just double the indicated time of each step.
  • Have a pen and paper ready at all stages of the exercise (alternatively, you can use your phone of course).

What is blocking you from Fulfilling Your Purpose – The Exercise

Getting Started…

  1. Choose one of the objects to represent you and place them somewhere in the space you prepared. If this is the first time you are working with representations you can use your voice to enhance the action. So you speak out loud: “this object represents me, as I am, today.” Say this before you place the object, so while holding it in your hands. Then go on to gently placing it WHEREVER you feel it should be. Let your intuition and your body guide you. Try not to overthink it.
  2. The second object you choose represents your purpose. Similarly to before, you can voice out loud: “ This object represents my purpose” while holding it in your hands. Now go on placing it anywhere in the designated working space. Remember that you do not have to know what your purpose is at this stage so do not let that make you insecure.
  3. Finally, take the third object, which represents the blockage (or the thing/s that is/are hindering you from stepping into your power and fulfilling your purpose). Again, while holding it, say: “This object represents that which is blocking me from fulfilling my purpose”. You can already try to observe what happens in your body when you voice this. Maybe you experience a tensening of the body. Or you might feel a sickness in your stomach, a headache surfacing, or maybe nothing happens at all. Just try to stay observant. Place the object wherever you feel it should be at this stage.
Fulfilling your purpose

Embarking on the Journey to Fulfilling Your Purpose…

  1. Now, look at the constellation of objects from a distance. Observe whatever emotions, feelings, body sensations, or thoughts arise. Slowly walk towards the object representing you (object nr.1) and either stand on it or touch it with your hand. Really try to connect and start observing what is happening with your body. What thoughts arise? What do you feel? Don’t worry if you feel like nothing much is happening. Just notice that as well without judging or trying to change anything. Take around 1 minute for this.
  2. Stay on this object and start looking at the other two (your purpose, the blockage). Notice what happens when you look at each one of them. Ask yourself the following questions: What is my connection to this specific object? Do I feel drawn to it? Repulsed? Neutral? How do I relate to it? Does it feel nice looking at it? Is it hard to look at it? Does it make me want to look away? It might even make you feel sick or give you other body sensations, like a pleasurable tingling or anything else. Take around one minute for each object. After this, take out your notebook (staying close to object nr. 1 (representing you) and write for about one minute everything that came up for you under points 4. and 5.

On we go…

  1. Now slowly step away from object 1 and walk towards your purpose (object nr. 2). Here, repeat everything you did while standing on object one. First, try to deeply connect to the thing you are representing; in this case, your purpose. Observe every body sensation, feeling, and thought that arises without judging or over-analyzing. Then, continue noticing everything you feel, sense, and think in relation to the other two objects (representing you and the blockage. Take three minutes in total for this part. Then again, stay close to this object and write everything you experienced here down for around one minute.
  2. Next, you go towards the last object (object nr.3), representing that which is blocking you from fulfilling your purpose. Again, you stand on it or touch it with your hand and observe everything arising in you on the emotional, physical and mental levels. Continue doing exaclty the same once more, but this time in relation to each of the other objects, as you have done in points 6. and 5. Now, take your notebook and write everything down you have experienced. Take 4 minutes in total for this point (3 for experiencing, 1 for writing).

Allowing Things to Move an get closer to Fulfilling Your Purpose…

We live in a time and age in which we all want quick and easy solutions. While I do encourage and believe in relatively fast healing processes – rushing ourselves will be counterproductive. Enjoy the ride. Keep on observing and celebrating the little changes. You are amazing and perfect just the way you already are now, in this very moment. Don’t forget that.

  1. Look at the constellation of objects from outside and start feeling if maybe something wants to move or change position. Feel free to experiment and change all three objects so you will have a completely new constellation of objects at the end. Now take around 1 minute to experience the changes in each object (by touching or standing on them) – finishing the exercise with object 1 representing you.
  2. Take as much time as you need and feel like – I suggest between 3 – 7 minutes, to write down everything you have experienced in point 8. as well as throughout the whole exercise. Don’t hold back and don’t filter. Try to write in a sort of stream of consciousness. Even if you suddenly find yourself writing about something completely different – go with it.
  3.  REST! I know I promised 15 minutes but if you have a bit more time, please consider taking at least ten minutes to just lay down an do nothing. We process most of our stuff while resting. Don;t think you are wasting your time while you do it. You are actaully giving your system the possibilty to digest and integrate what you have just experienced. In many ways, it is only the resting phases which really make the change happen in the end. This part is especially crucial if you are very busy in your daily life and rarley take pauses like that.

Additional Tips & Guidelines on how to continue working on this subject.

Now, as much as I believe in the power of this work – I am not selling miracles. You will not wake up tomorrow living your dream life if at the start of this exercise you did not even know what your purpose was. But if you have done the exercise correctly – you will have gained a much deeper understanding of what is holding you back and how you can change it. For best results, I recommend doing this exercise every day for one whole week. You’ll be surprised at how much movement will happen after that week. Another way to work with it is to simply follow your intuition: whenever you feel the time is right to continue working, pick up on where you left it last time and repeat the same exercise. You’ll see how different your processes will be each time. Another very important point is to give yourself time. We live in a time and age where we all want quick and easy solutions. While I do encourage and believe in relatively fast healing processes – rushing ourselves will be counterproductive. Enjoy the ride. Keep on observing and celebrating the little changes. You are amazing and perfect just the way you are already now, in this very moment. Don’t forget that.
